Airy was used to the light touch of Rachel's hand, the warmth of her magic, and her presence in the face of anything clinical; she wasn't only Airy's doctor but her teacher, friend and surrogate family. Her only other interaction with needles had been when Shade had given her the tattoo on her shoulder-blade. She had felt the steady ache and thrum of pain but then her adrenaline had kicked in.
This was different.
Matt's hand was cold but strong and comforting. The needle bit lightly at her skin and if asked later, Airy would claim that she hadn't felt it at all. The odd feeling was when the liquid was pushed into her veins. She felt a little light headed but that was psychological and had nothing to do with the drug. Then there was a thin trail of fiery heat that trailed through her arm. The ribbon loosened and she felt the blood and heady sensation return to her head as if it was a wave trailing up the length of her arm.
She looked back at Matthew, at her arm and then at the ribbon. She gently took the red trimming and focused on the silky fabric as she rubbed it between her thumb and forefinger. "What am I supposed to feel?" It had taken a minute or two but not much longer. Airy felt herself relax. It wasn't like she had control over it either but it wasn't alarming. She felt calm and steady. Her skin itched a little but it was easy to ignore as the heady euphoric feeling began to mount.
Bright blue eyes looked up at Matt and she blinked.
"Oh."
That was all she could think to say.
The feelings continued to steadily rise and fall but the drug was working a lot faster than anything she'd ever inhaled.
TLDR;
This was different.
